Description
Located 5 km (3 miles) away from Giverny, visit a museum that holds many surprises including two original paintings made by Monet.
The museum is divided into four themes. The section dedicated to Giverny’s colony of artists displays Impressionist paintings, donated by the artists themselves (Mary Fairchild MacMonnies, Théodore Butler, Monet's son-in-law, etc.) or their relatives, and two original paintings by Monet: a circular "Water Lily" and" The Cliffs of Pourville at Sunset" (1896). This section was developed thanks to numerous donations and an important purchasing policy. The Nabis section displays two landscapes of the bank of the river Seine by Pierre Bonnard, one of the founders of the movement and canvases by Maurice Denis and Felix Vallotton. The Steinlen section holds one of the most important collections of works of art by Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen. The section dedicated to animals shows the evolution of the representation of animals in the 19th and 20th centuries thanks to drawings, posters, engravings by Bugatti, Pompon, César, Jouve. The works of art of the animal section are displayed, in turn, in the museum's cabinet d’arts graphiques (print and drawing room).
